During the final stages of the First World War Houtem was one of the important airfields of the Aviation Militaire, housing numbers 6 and 7 Squadrons specialised in observation and photographic reconnaissance respectively.

Houtem as seen from the South. On the foreground one can discover 6 RAF RE8 'Harry Tate" observation aircraft of n° 6 Squadron. Near the "Bessonneau" hangars in the background a mix of Sopwith Camels, Nieuport 17/23's and some Spads are visible.
