Wingman to the Belgian ace of aces Willy Coppens, 1Sgt Maj. Carlo Verbessem was said to be an extremely skilful pilot. He was posted to the 1st Squadron on 7 June 1917 and flew a Nieuport 17 bedecked with his personal marking, a green triangle. Verbessem unfortunately was killed on 19 December 1917 when he was hit by shrapnel.
